The new apparel is designed to increase comfort and protect staff while working in hot weather conditions.
The high-visibility summer polo shirt is lightweight and made of breathable material; the soft-shell zip jacket is water repellent; and the summer hat is wide brimmed to provide sun protection. The new apparel was chosen by the uniform committee in consultation with front-line paramedics. The shirt, jacket and hat are in addition to the BCEHS regularly issued uniform.
Paramedic Clint Walper says, “I like the lightweight material, the pockets and the fact it is high visibility. Safety first!”
Paramedic Launa Lambrecht was equally impressed after trying on the new shirt and jacket for the first time. “The material is soft and comfortable, and I like the high viz.”
“I love the new look. It’s a great fit,” adds paramedic Wael AbuSalim.
Unprecedented hot weather last year underscored the need for more protection for staff health and wellness in high-risk heat conditions. To ensure staff are well-hydrated while working in the field, each member has been issued a vacuum insulated water bottle. The Yeti bottles will also be given to all BCEHS staff and Logistics.
Staff will be asked for feedback in the fall to assess the effectiveness of the new items.
