Riding Second & Third Program

Experience a day in the life of a paramedic:
Are you considering a career with BCEHS? Explore the dynamic world of emergency health services through our Riding Second & Third Program!

What to expect from the BCEHS ride along experience

Through our Riding Second and Third program, you'll have the chance to shadow a paramedic team, as they respond to various emergency calls. Witness firsthand the fast-paced environment, critical decision-making, and compassionate care that define our profession during your ride-along.
As an observer, you'll have a unique vantage point to observe our paramedics in action. While you won't participate in patient care directly, you'll gain valuable insights into our protocols, procedures, and communication techniques.

Ensuring your safety: guidelines for your ride-along experience

During your observation shift, you will be witnessing individuals during their most challenging and vulnerable moments.  Therefore, throughout your time with us, prioritizing respect and safeguarding privacy should remain steadfast commitments.

Your safety is paramount to us. During the application process, our team will brief you on safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a secure learning experience. Some calls may require you to wait in the ambulance while the paramedics attend to the patient. This is a standard safety protocol to ensure everyone’s well-being, including yours.

Riding Second & Third Program candidate requirements:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Not currently employed by BCEHS or PHSA
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check
  • Genuine interest in working as a paramedic
